Girls' Handmade Dream Journals

A Quiet Holiday
Hyun’s holidays passed quietly. She is a homebody, so she spent her days playing the piano, sleeping in, and meeting her friends online. On days when Min was out, she played with Jin on the trampoline. Sometimes she opened her device and seemed absorbed in something for ages; at other times, she sat at her desk, quietly fiddling with things and making something of her own.

As the only one of the three girls who had not signed up for a holiday programme this time, her one outing was a library programme she attended with Min. It was a ninety-minute Dream Journal workshop held at Glenfield Library.

We arrived at the library without needing to bring a single thing. Beautiful patterned fabrics and sheets of paper had been neatly arranged on the tables, waiting for the children. Each child chose a fabric in their favourite colour and pattern, made a cover, threaded the binding, and added the pages to create a journal of their own. Hyun chose a dark brown fabric covered in tiny dots. Hopefully, the journal she made with her own hands will become a small starting point for a new habit in the coming term.

The First Sleepover
The other big event of Hyun’s holidays was her very first sleepover. Having always watched Min’s friends come over to stay, Hyun was excited from the moment we agreed that she could invite her best friend for the night.

Last letter: “Mairangi Notes #26 Days with Lighter Layers”

We laid mattresses across the floor of the downstairs entertainment room and put up the heat-retaining tent in case the early spring night turned cold. The girls ate plenty of snacks and ran around the garden, spraying water as they played. They played games together and watched a film on the projector. Later that night, Min joined them, and the three girls made cup noodles for a late-night snack and stayed up playing until very late.

Unsurprisingly, Hyun woke up late the next morning. Even after her friend had gone home, she remained tired and slept in again the following day. She had certainly made the most of the freedom of her first sleepover.
